When I was younger
My mum made us both
A pair of wings,
Attached to our wrists with elastic
That we could pretend didn't exist.
From your hospital bed, our enemies were fought:
Sadness and pain.
We were fairies,
Up against the world
With our golden netting wings
Ten years on
My wings float
At the end of my bed
I need them just as much as then,
But cannot use them anymore.
I don't know where
Your wings are
You stopped needing them
When you grew your own.
