Number 19: New Age

The genre 'New Age' is a genre that encompasses all types of downtempo (laid-back) music. The music in this genre has a purpose of inspiring, relaxing and/or encouraging optimism. It is often used during yoga, massage or meditation, and is strongly associated with New Age spirituality.
New Age music can be quite repetitive, which results in very long pieces. They use a range of instruments including flutes, harps and guitars- however, pieces can also be electronic/synthesized. Originally, use of vocals was rare, but this has become more common, though the vocals are generally chant-based.
