I've decided that I really don't like the woman presenter on the evening Olympic swimming. I don't know who she is, but that's irrelevant.
My reason? The women's 800m final (which was on Friday). For GB, it involved the amazing Rebecca Adlington, who set the last world record for the event in Beijing (2008).
I made sure I was able to watch it; being a swimmer, Adlington is a huge inspiration. Of course I wanted her to win, but I was happy that she got bronze. The Olympics is so renowned, getting bronze is still a pretty big thing, especially as the woman who came first was fairly new, and Adlington kept the world record.
Another thing I loved was that wehn Adlington was interviewed, she clearly said that she didn't want pity for getting 'only third'- she stated that she was happy, and wanted others to be happy, not sympathetic.
However, the BBC presenter made it sound as if third was a huge disappointment, which really annoyed me, and I was slightly mollified when the woman (probably prompted by a BBC executive) apologised 'in case her comments came across as being disparaging'. Yet she went on to say- when Adlington was being presented with her medal, and was crying- that she 'must' be crying because she hadn't got first. Okay, so it would be a disappointment when the whole of Great Britain is expecting a gold, but Adlington specifically said she didn't want people to make comments like that. I'd like to see the presenter swim for GB and do anywhere near as well!
Adlington is a-ma-zing, and she has the whole of GB behind her!
Despite being bored of the Olympics beforehand, I've been watching with great interest, and am exceedingly proud of all Team GB (and Team Nigeria), along with every other competitor for being able to do what they do and give 100%. So congratulations to each and every Olympic competitor, regardless of country or standing!!
