A Take On Beauty

You're not beautiful. You've never said it, not in so many words, but I know that's what you think. How could anyone ever see you as being beautiful? After all, you can't see it, when you look in the mirror.
Let me tell you a huge truth. The mirror lies.
Have you ever seen yourself when you're completely absorbed in something? Have you seen the look of concentration in your eyes, the way you bite your lip, ever so lightly? Your hair falls from behind your ear, and you leave it, unchecked. The world could crumble around you, and you wouldn't notice, so there's no chance you could know you were being gently watched. No chance you could even begin to imagine how beautiful you look.
Different scenario. Have you ever caught yourself mid-laugh? Not a self-conscious giggle, a fully fledged laugh, the kind that can't be contained. Your eyes light up and your face is alive with humour. It's like your whole face glows, with a smile that ignites your eyes. Nothing else matters in that moment, except whatever's making you laugh. Beauty's the last thing on your mind.
How about when you're nervous? You're so vulnerable and exposed- and so open. You're face is slightly shadowed by whatever it is that's on your mind, your head tilted as you contemplate whatever's ahead. There's nothing else on your mind. Least of all how you look.
You don't see yourself during those times, when you're just you, with nothing else. So don't start to think, even for a moment, that you're not beautiful. Of course you are. Oh, you are.
